When a relationship is falling apart couples will often seek the help of a marriage counselor to assist them in identifying the fundamental issues and teaching them the tools that they will need to piece their relationship back together again. Marriage counseling is not something that you should be ashamed of, rather, you should be proud that you are taking the steps that you need to in order to save your marriage instead of giving up when things get difficult. A marriage counselor has received extensive education on the best ways to help couples resolve their conflicts and deal with the problems that they are facing. A marriage counselor, like most therapists, will have obtained a masters degree, as well as have completed a one year internship and passed a state qualifying exam. So, you can be sure that a licensed marriage counselor is qualified and equipped with the proper tools and knowledge to help your marriage prosper. It is important that if you are enlisting the aid of a marriage counselor that you find one that you and your partner both trust, as you will be confiding in them and utilizing their advice to mend your relationship. Marriage counseling is used as a way to rebuild the lines of communication between spouses as well as address negative issues such as jealousy and anger that may be sabotaging your marriage. A marriage counselor is also someone who can help a family that is trying to cope with substance abuse or families who are victims of physical and emotional abuse. Marriage counseling is the only thing that has kept a relationship from falling apart. A marriage counselor seeks to help couples rekindles their spark, but in some cases they also assist couples in realizing that it is time to split up and that it is in both spouses’ best interests to go their separate ways.

Many people find the idea of marriage counseling unsettling. They do not like the thought of opening their personal lives to a stranger and sharing intimate thoughts and problems with them. There are alternatives available for individuals who do not wish to attend traditional marriage counseling sessions. There are marriage counseling blogs and forums that are dedicated to providing advice and helping people cope with any anxiety or depression that they are experiencing due to the problems that they are facing within their marriage. There are also many online resources that provide marriage counseling and you can also find counseling that can be done over the phone. Dr. Ellen Kreidman has created a program that does not require spouses to sit in front of a therapist and talk about their issues. Instead it is aimed at teaching someone what they can do in order to reignite the flame that was there in the beginning of their relationship. The program is called ‘Light His Fire’ or ‘Light Her Fire’, depending on who is purchasing it, and is available in a CD box set or to be downloaded directly from the computer to your ipod or Mp3 player. Dr. Kreidman has been featured on television shows such as The View, The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Today Show, as well as in magazines like The New York Times and People Magazine. To date her program has sold over one million copies. A similar program called ‘The Us Factor’ is a DVD program that provides couples with the skills that they need in order to create a prosperous marriage and teaches them how to deal with common problems that frequent marriages, such as trust issues, infidelity, boredom, arguing and lack of intimacy. Many people prefer approaches such as these when trying to save their marriage because it provides more privacy and can be done in the comfort of your own home.

Many times people who are experiencing issues or problems in school, work, relationships or other aspects of life, will choose to see a counselor. The job of a counselor is to listen and provide advice to their patients. This form of therapy allows for patients to relay ideas, fears, worries and feelings to another individual and receive feedback in return. The patient puts their trust in a counselor and confides in him/her in hopes that they will better be able to understand and deal with the problems that they are facing in life. A counselor can work in a wide variety of locations and within a diverse group of specialties. A person who chooses to go into counseling can choose to specialize in areas such as educational, rehabilitation, mental health or marriage and relationship counseling. The majority of therapists choose to go into educational counseling. In 2008 there were about 275,800 people who went into the field of educational counseling, which is by far the largest group within the specialties. An educational counselor is required to interact with students on a daily basis and helps the students to cope with any academic, social and personal issues that they are facing in an effort to enhance their mental and emotional growth. A smaller but equally important specialty is that of marriage and relationship counseling, which included 27,300 licensed therapists in 2008. If an individual is unhappy in their relationship they may decide that they want to try to work through the problems instead of ending the relationship. Many times the process of working through the fundamental problems of a marriage or relationship involves taking part in marriage or relationship counseling. Usually marriage counseling involves the presence of both spouses, but occasionally an individual will choose to see a relationship councilor on their own. A marriage or relationship councilor will help you to work through your problems and strengthen your relationship. Many strong couples can attribute their success to the assistance of a relationship counselor. It allows spouses to work through confrontations and empathize with their partner. If you are experiencing problems in your relationship the assistance of a marriage or relationship counselor will help you to reestablish communication that may have deteriorated over time.

You may find counselors working in schools, hospitals and private clinics. Often times counselor may choose to become self employed and open his/her own practice. Counseling provides people with someone to confide in, a way to work through their problems, and outside advice which provides a new and fresh perspective on problems and confrontations. You are able to talk about the issues that you are dealing with in a safe and private environment. Seeking the advice and assistance of a counselor is never something that you should be ashamed of. They have undergone extensive education in order to learn how to better help people from all areas of life cope with problems. It does not matter what your background is, everyone needs a little bit of help sometimes.
